Breaking Bad Habits

First you need to admit to yourself that you actually do have a bad habit. Then ask yourself a few questions:
  • What exactly is the bad habit?
  • What is the real reason I do this habit?
  • Why can't I stop this habit?
  • What would it feel like to be able to stop this habit?
  • What will be the benefit(s) when I stop this habit?

Now you need to work out exactly how you are going to break this habit. You need to be specific.
  • Do you need to make other adjustments in your life first?
  • Do you need to spend less time around certain people, places or things?
  • Do you need to replace this habit with something else?

Make a plan and decide on what it is you are going to track. Now you need a checklist. This could be as simple as a piece of paper, a spreadsheet, or a website that allows you to track habits. Now the key to breaking the habit comes next:

You must enter you results EVERY SINGLE DAY on your checklist. This activity needs to become a habit, and by doing this everyday you will constantly be reminded that you are in the process of breaking a bad habit. Eventually you will start checking more and more days where you have not done your bad habit, you will create a "chain" and the longer the chain grows - the more you will not want to break it. Every time you make a check on your checklist, think about the benefits you are recieving by breaking this bad habit. If you do slip up - you need to forgive yourself, don't dwell on it, just commit to do better and move on. The worst thing you can do is stop checking that checklist because you see a few negative days. Stick with the commitment and eventually you will break that bad habit.

Remember that most important things in life require a plan:
  • Getting a degree in college requires a plan.
  • Building a house requires a plan.
  • Getting a great job requires a plan.
  • Building a business requires a plan.
  • Saving enough money for an enjoyable retirement requires a plan.

If breaking this bad habit is truly important to you, then you need to realize that you need a plan. Most people think that having a plan to break a habit is silly - and most people won't ever break that habit. Develop a plan, get your checklist ready, commit to checking it every day, and enjoy a nice reward when you have truly broken your habit!
