Give your children the gift of discipline with a daily checklist
You can call it a checklist or a chore chart, or maybe even a todo list. But whatever you call it, your kids need one! Why you ask? Because kids need to develop habits, kids need to learn that certain things are expected of them in life. Kids need to learn that we pick up after ourselves. Kids need to learn that we need to brush our teeth and have good personal hygiene. Kids need to learn how to work. "Work" can mean alot of different things, but our kids need to learn that there is more to life than just playing.
Example Habit Tracker
When you see a hard working adult, you can bet that he learned those habits as a kid, and he learned them by doing - over and over.
Some people think that kids just need to be kids, which I totally agree with. But before you know it, kids are teenagers who haven't learned basic life skills, and then they are adults, out of the house, with no life skills. Actually maybe they are adults - but they are not out of the house, and the reason they aren't is because their parents didn't teach them to develop habits as a child.
Ok, but why do we need a checklist for them. Because without a checklist it can't be tracked, if it can't be tracked it can't be measured, and if it can't be measured then you have no idea how they are doing. It doesn't have to be rocket science, but making sure that something gets done sets the foundation for a child to learn and make something a routine. You can "guess" that your child brushes her teeth "most of the time", but if you have the child track this - you may find out your best guess is far from the truth.
Remember this is for the child to track, not the parent. The child needs to learn the importance of not only doing the task or habit, but in recording her progress, working towards a goal and learning how to get things done. We need to make sure that our children are prepared when they enter the world. We need to make sure that they know certain things are expected of them, and that mommy and daddy are not going to be there to remind them anymore.
Here is a quick list of helpful ideas from how to teach your kids good habits:
- Use the carrot, not the stick.
- Be their focus.
- Provide multiple means of motivation.
- Try to be consistent for at least a month.
- Remember that kids aren’t perfect.
- Join them.
- Celebrate often!
Obviously each child is different, some will have certain habits down perfect. There is no sense in tracking these. But usually every child will have areas that need work. Focus on the most important habits first, once those have become a part of the daily routine move on down the list. Make sure the child is involved in the process, let them choose some habits to add, and let them record their progress. Above all, make sure to praise your child when an improvement is made!
